There are many options avaiable for the area under your playground. All of them will provide a level of safety for falls, provided that they are installed correctly with the right amount of depth and that they are maintained.
Many people will place their play set directly on the lawn. It is very important to understand that the grass under the set must be maintained continually. It must be reseeded, fertilized, and watered extensively to make sure it stays thick and plush providing a level of impact absorbtion. Sets with fall heights greater than 5' high should seek a better surface than the lawn. Worn areas, should they occur must be repaired as soon as possible and play restricted until the area is replenished. Utilizing play mats to increase impact absorbing is also a good idea with play sets placed on grass.
Wood mulch as a play surface is the most affordable option for ground cover. The biggest mistake that people make when selecting this product is not using enough of it. The price is cheap enough that buying extra is not wasteful, but rather an investment in the overall safety of the play system. For most residential applications we suggest 6-8 inches of wood chips. We also suggest using a geo-textile weed mat as well. This is applied on the ground before the wood chips are installed. The perimeter can be enclosed with ties of any number of materials. We sell rubber ties, as well as wood ties. Both work well. The rubber ties are soft so a trip and fall on to them is a bit safer than a fall on the wood ones. The main purpose of the ties is to keep the mulch from migrating. Some applications, in less formal areas, are often done without border ties. this eliminates the possibility of tripping upon entering or exiting the play area. This type of installation works well in wooded areas.
When Wood Kingdom East does a wood mulch job, our mulch is a mixture of hardwoods and cedar. This creates a combination that is impact absorbing and to some extent insect repelling. Rubber mulch is an outstanding surface option for your play area. It provides excellent impact absorption and color projection. It is easy to install, it is clean, splinter free, and a sound environmental choice since it is the by product of tire recycling. It is non toxic and resists mold and fungus growth. It is easy to maintain, just the occasional rake out to level. We do suggest that the installation first have a geo-textile mat installed to prevent weed growth under the rubber mulch. The perimeter around the play area should have ties to keep the rubber mulch from migrating. Ties are available in plastic, rubber, and wood. All will keep the mulch in place, while providing their own specific benefit to the application. Rubber mulch has a great impact absorption ability, and as such it does not have to be installed as deep as wood mulch. In addition it does not have to be replenished as often as wood mulch does. It comes in various color options, which means you can design the look you want in your yard, and to match and coordinate with your play set. Call us at 631-451-2200 for a fast and accurate quote.

The choice of many commercial playground installations this is by far the most comprehensive surfacing option available. Because of its unique nature it requires substantial site preparation prior to installation. The surface can be had two ways, with a finish coat and without. The finish coat is done of virgin material while the base layer is done using recycled material. The depth of the product is directly determined by the fall heights of the play set. It does not require ties to stop migration, but it does require an edge to define the border and to hold the intial pour of the product prior to hardening, similiar to concrete forms. Color options are huge and many patterns are also available to create a unique and bold look to your play area.
